Empowering Migrants Through Skills and Entrepreneurship: Dissemination Activities in Italy

The Italian organization Mali Musow ODV played a pivotal role in promoting the ‘Connecting Cultures: A Step Towards Integration’ project by organizing two impactful workshops in September 2024 in Italy. These workshops were designed to provide young migrants with essential skills, focusing on entrepreneurship and practical vocational training as pathways toward social and economic integration.

Workshop 1: Building Entrepreneurial Skills for Migrant Youth

Held in Prato on September 10, 2024, this workshop aimed to equip young migrants with fundamental business and entrepreneurship skills to foster self-reliance and economic independence. Participants, primarily young migrants with aspirations to start small businesses, engaged in interactive sessions covering:

  • How to develop a business idea – Identifying opportunities, evaluating market needs, and defining business goals.
  • Basic financial literacy – Understanding pricing strategies, managing personal and business finances, and accessing funding opportunities.
  • Legal and administrative procedures – Navigating the Italian business regulations, tax requirements, and obtaining necessary permits.
  • Networking and mentorship – Connecting participants with local entrepreneurs and business mentors who shared success stories and guidance on overcoming challenges.

The workshop featured guest speakers from local business incubators and migrant entrepreneurs who provided firsthand insights into setting up and sustaining a business in Italy. Participants were also given access to a step-by-step digital guide on business development tailored for migrant entrepreneurs.

Workshop 2: Vocational Training for Economic Inclusion

The second workshop, conducted in Prato on September 20, 2024, focused on equipping migrants with practical, job-relevant skills that improve employability in various industries. This hands-on training emphasized:

  • Technical skills development – Practical training sessions in fields such as construction, hospitality, and digital services, with an emphasis on skills highly demanded in the Italian job market.
  • Job application and CV-building guidance – Coaching on crafting professional CVs, writing cover letters, and preparing for job interviews.
  • Workers’ rights and labor market integration – Educating participants on employment laws, workers’ rights, and how to secure fair working conditions in Italy.
  • Soft skills training – Fostering teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills to thrive in a multicultural workplace.

This workshop was organized in collaboration with vocational training institutions and companies that provided real-world insights into employment opportunities. Several participants were offered follow-up apprenticeship opportunities and mentorship from industry professionals, increasing their chances of sustainable employment.

The Impact: Strengthening Migrant Integration in Italy

Both workshops received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and stakeholders. By offering structured support in entrepreneurship and vocational training, Mali Musow ODV provided young migrants with tangible pathways toward self-sufficiency and long-term integration.

Conclusion: A Model for Future Inclusion Efforts

Through these practical and solution-oriented workshops, Mali Musow ODV reinforced the core message of the ‘Connecting Cultures’ project— that integration is most successful when migrants are empowered with skills, knowledge, and mentorship opportunities. The organization remains committed to expanding these initiatives and collaborating with local businesses, educational institutions, and policymakers to ensure a sustainable, inclusive future for migrant communities in Italy.
